The MedSteps5Challenge, a unique charity event that involves climbing the iconic Mediterranean Steps, is set to celebrate its 10th anniversary on April 20, 2024. Sponsored by Chestertons and Sovereign, this milestone edition promises to be bigger and better, all while continuing its mission to raise funds for Cancer Relief Gibraltar.
The MedSteps5Challenge was born in 2015 when Mark Cooper, along with friends Graham Dyer and Simon Morgan, cycled from London to Gibraltar. Mark’s ingenious idea to walk or run up and down the Mediterranean Steps five times in a single day gave birth to this extraordinary challenge. The inaugural event raised an impressive £6,000, and over £100,000 has been collected for the charity over the eight years that followed. This event has not only become an annual charity event for the Prison Service but has also become a cherished fixture on Gibraltar’s community event calendar. To commemorate its 10th anniversary and make the event even more remarkable, the organizers have secured lead sponsorship from Sovereign and local estate agents Chestertons.
Both sponsors have committed to supporting the event for the next three years, with additional support from Livescore and Image Graphics. Mark Cooper, the driving force behind the MedSteps5Challenge, shared his enthusiasm: “Generous sponsorship now means the MedSteps5Challenge can attract an even greater following, with all participants receiving a quality event T-shirt for their £15 entry fee. Participants who raise more than £150 through JustGiving will receive free entry, including a T-shirt. Completing three or five laps will also earn participants a medal. Importantly, 100% of funds raised go directly to Cancer Relief Gibraltar.”
Sovereign Wealth Managing Director, Eamon Bermingham, expressed his delight, stating, “Sovereign is delighted to be the joint lead sponsor of this fantastic event. We will be bringing a lot of our team along to take part, and we all hope to see you all there.” Paul Duck, Managing Director of Chestertons, added, “Chestertons is thrilled to be part of the 10th anniversary MedSteps5Challenge. We’re excited to join hands with the organizers and sponsors to make this event even more remarkable for the benefit of Cancer Relief, a charity close to our hearts.”
Besides the main challenge, Mark Cooper and his co-organizer, John Pacheco, are planning a pre-event walk from Castellar to Gibraltar on March 23. This 20km walk will serve as a final training session before the main event and offers an alternative way for those unable to attend the main challenge to raise funds for the Cancer Relief Centre. For participants in either event (MedSteps5 or Castellar), the organizers recommend opening a Just Giving Page for Cancer Relief Gibraltar, with the total funds raised added to the final tally after the MedSteps event. The MedSteps5 team is hosting two open days to promote the event, one on March 8 and another on April 10 at the Piazza from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
